TikTok Days Are Numbered. Should We Worry?
We all followed the “I don’t love you anymore, but let’s remain friends” game played by TikTok and Universal Music this year, which has shaken TikTok just enough to make them sit at the negotiating table. But now, more than ever before, the Chinese social media platform will face an unprecedented challenge: starting with January, it should be banned in the US. Most probably, more countries will follow the trend, started by India in 2020. And with this, gone will be an important promo channel for a lot of artists (read more about this here). Will there be TikTok clones rising from the shadows to fill in this void? Well, we already have them: Youtube Shorts and Instagram Reels, throwing the music world into the greedy hands of this bi-cephal monopoly we are embracing for the past decade.
The Impact Of Generative AI Over Music Industry: 64 Billion by 2028
Now this is some scary news: according to a study published recently by CISAC (the International Confederation of Societies of Authors and Composers), music and audiovisual creators will lose 24% of their income to their generative AI counterparts. The study finds that the market for music and AV content generated by AI will increase exponentially in the next five years, growing from around €3 billion now to €64 billion in 2028. Now, more than ever before, it’s time to tighten up the copyrighting laws (more on this here) and keep the AI dog on a leash.
Apple Sold 18 Billion Worth AirPods in 2024! Come Again?!
People love to listen to music and they love doing it in style. The tiny earbuds sold by Apple account for around 20% of the total market, a bit over Sony’s market share (around 18%). And if this figure doesn’t impress you, take a look at this one: 18 billion USD as a revenue only in 2024! Crazy, right? And perhaps crazier than this is the rate people lose their AirPods: 700 million USD spent only to replace a lost earbud in 2024
Cool Resources: The Passive Promotion Newsletter
Brian Hazard makes synthwave music for quite some time, under the Color Theory moniker. We had an interesting chat with him a while ago here, as he’s taking for a spin just about any music promotion service he finds interesting / intruiging. Like those famouse Vice Mag features: “So you don’t have to…” This would help you avoid scams, botted playslists and services and also see how efficient these services are to promoting your music. He gathered all these experiences on his website, here. Take your time and browse through his articles, I bet you’ll find some goodies in there.
Now Back To Music: A Different Kind Of Christmas Playlist
Already fed up with Mariah Carrey, Bing Cosby, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, with their over-played versions of Christmas songs? Time to change the groove to something more… alternative. Amy Winehouse, The Killers, The Dandy Warhols, Mt. Joy give a tone of blue to this Christmas. You just have to hit the Play button on the Indie Christmas Playlist 2024 here
